      Within the city limits of Gadsden, is the Gadsden - Etowah County Head Start Program. Head  Start began as a summer program under the leadership of  Ms. Kathryn L. Barrett. The Head Start Program has been in it's present location since 1973, mushrooming from 120-funded enrollment to 320-funded enrollment. Head Start offers the following services: Education, Health (Medical, Dental, and Nutrition), Disabilities, Family Services, Parent Involvement, Male Initiative, Mental Health, and Family Partnership Under our present director Mr. Belvie Brice, our Mission Statement has taken on a more personal meaning, which says all families have individual worth and one's quality of life can be significantly improved if opportunities are provided by Head Start coupled with a community linkage to generate productivity, self-esteem and sufficiency.
